Most people don’t hand solder their surface mount LED matrices these days, and they certainly don’t do it with RGB LEDs. [Jonas Ruchti] isn’t most people, has managed to grow his electronic hobby into the art form know as Bonsai.

The article discusses the history of the Bonsai LED Matrix, a chaotic pixel art project that has been in development for over two years. The article also includes a video demonstration of the current state of the project.
The Bonsai LED Matrix is a chaotic pixel art project that has been in development for over two years. The idea for the project was first conceived by freelance developer and artist Adam Twardoch, who had always been fascinated with the possibilities of building large-scale LED displays using small individual LEDs. During his travels across Europe, he began collecting small LED lights and other electronic parts that he intended to use in a future project.
After returning home to Poland, Adam began experimenting with these components, playing around with them and seeing what kinds of patterns he could create using the tiny LEDs. After months of experimentation, his idea for an LED matrix took shape: a chaotic system built from a grid of small LEDs, each one capable of emitting a different color.
The project quickly began to take on a life of its own, and Adam recruited friends and fellow developers to help him with the construction of the matrix. After nearly two years of work, the Bonsai LED Matrix is now complete, and it’s been used to create some amazing pixel art.
